Barry Rubin strikes again!!

In his latest post on "How to tell who is a Moderate Islamist" Barry hits the nail square on the head once again. Brilliantly written, the scene is set at the rally at one of Egypt's leading Mosques,  where in true blood thirsty fashion, the barbaric hoards  scream, "One day we shall kill all Jews.”  It is a chilling piece that is a combination of quotes from both Islamist leaders as well as the  completely ignorant  reactions of our own  incompetent leaders who continue to espouse opinions divorced from reality, such as "... the Muslim Brotherhood is a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence."  and what is the person that said that doing now? Answer: Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and he’s still director of national intelligence."

How can anyone misunderstand the comments we hear, such as slaughter the Jews ( ITBACH AL YAHUD ), or Death to America, or Death to Israel.

I know when I hear such ignorant lunacy in denying the vitriolic hatred that our enemies speak, I can only remark incredulously, NO WAY!!

How can anybody that has studied history, that has access to the internet, that grew up with the benefit of living in freedom, be so blind about one of the most vicious, antisemitic, most powerful, organized, ruthless and well armed, Islamist groups on this planet? NO WAY!!

To understand this, you have to read this article!!

At the end of the article, there is an extra credit question that begs a response; for my answer, I like to use Michael Savage's often heard phrase, which provides the most cogent answer I can think of,

" Liberalism is a Mental Disorder"

ANOTHER EXCELLENT POST ON FACEBOOK!!

The State of Israel is being harshly criticized for making changes to its laws affecting "Freedom of the Press". The yelling is so loud that one would assume Israel is shutting down Free Press rights.

The truth is a bit different.

The Knesset is making some simple changes to libel and slander laws, making it easier to sue for slander and libel and making the penalties (which were quite low) a bit higher. Other nations have done the same thing without the great international whining by the press.
...
What the new law does is penalize lying and punishes bad journalism. Why is that bad?

The World Press has forgotten the basic rules of good journalism: Check your sources. Separate opinion from fact clearly. Make sure sources are credible and that there are supporting sources.

Instead, journalism has become a game of accusations, unverified opinion (most often politically correct) masquerading as fact.

Enacting laws is the consequence of press irresponsibility and lack of ethical conduct.

Behind the Headlines: The Israeli humanitarian lifeline to Gaza

Humanitarian aid despite Hamas attacks

Despite attacks by Hamas, Israel maintains an ongoing humanitarian corridor for the transfer of perishable and staple food items to Gaza. This conduit is used by internationally recognized organizations including the United Nations and the Red Cross.
Well over a million tons of humanitarian supplies entered Gaza from Israel over the last 18 months equaling nearly a ton of aid for every man, woman and child in Gaza. Millions of dollars worth of international food aid continually flows through the Israeli humanitarian apparatus, ensuring that there is no food shortage in Gaza.
Since the end of the IDF operation in Gaza (18 Jan 2009) until 5 June 2010, 1,025,686 tons of aid, 49,610  tons of cooking gas and 136,097,330 liters of fuel have been delivered to the Gaza Strip.
Food and supplies are shipped from Israel to Gaza six days a week. These items were channeled through aid organizations or via Gaza's private sector.

Large quantities of essential food items like baby formula, wheat, meat, dairy products and other perishables are transferred daily and weekly to Gaza. Fertilizers that cannot be used to make explosives are shipped into the Strip regularly, as are potato seeds, eggs for reproduction, bees, and equipment for the flower industry.
In 2009 alone, more than 738,000 tons of food and supplies entered Gaza. Pictures in local newspapers show local markets aplenty with fruit, vegetables, cheese, spices, bread and meat to feed 1.4 million Gazans.
In the first quarter of 2010 (January-March), 94,500 tons of supplies were transferred in 3,676 trucks to the Strip: 48,000 tons of food products; 40,000 tons of wheat; 2,760 tons of rice; 1,987 tons of clothes and footwear; 553 tons of milk powder and baby food.
In a typical week the IDF coordinates the transfer of hundreds of trucks containing about 15,000 tons of supplies.  During the week of May 18, 2010 there were more than 100 truckloads of animal food, 65 trucks of fruit and vegetables; 22 truckloads of sugar, some 27 truckloads of meat, poultry and fish; and 40 trucks of dairy products. At holiday times, Israel increases transfers. During the Muslim holy days of Ramadhan and Eid al-Adha, Israel shipped some 11,000 heads of cattle into the Strip.

Maintaining medical aid for all in need

The medical corridor
No Palestinian is denied medical care in Israel. However, if the Hamas regime does not grant permits for medical care, the Israeli government can do nothing to help the patient. Israel will facilitate all cases of medical treatments from Gaza, unless the patient is a known perpetrator of terror.
Israel maintains a corridor for the transfer of medical patients out of Gaza, and about 200 medical staff members go through the crossings every month. Israel also helps coordinate the transfer of Jordanian doctors into Gaza.
In 2009 alone, 10,544 patients and their companions left the Gaza Strip for medical treatment in Israel. Moreover, there were 382 emergency evacuations from Gaza for medical purposes.
The Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem donates $3 million in aid annually to treat Palestinians in Israel. Following fears of a swine flu outbreak, three Israeli hospitals were assigned to treat cases in the Gaza Strip and 44,500 immunizations were transferred to the Strip.
Since 2005, Palestinians exploited medical care arrangements more than 20 times to carry out terror attacks.
Medical equipment
In 2009, some 4,883 tons of medical equipment and medicine were brought in.
In the first quarter of 2010, Israel shipped 152 trucks of medical supplies and equipment into Gaza. In a typical week (in May 2010), some 37 truckloads of hygiene products were shipped to Gaza through the land crossings. In addition, a new CAT scan machine was recently shipped to Gaza.
In 2009, Israel coordinated the transfer of medical supplies for the disabled including wheelchairs, crutches and first aid kits. Other equipment shipped to Gaza include heart-monitors, baby feeding tubes, dental equipment, medical books, ambulance emergency equipment, artificial limbs and infant sleeping bags.

Building for the future: Infrastructure and economic aid

Building materials
While the import of cement and iron has been restricted into Gaza since these are used by the Hamas to cast rockets and bunkers, monitored imports of truckloads of cement, iron, and building supplies such as wood and windows are regularly coordinated with international parties. Already in the first quarter of 2010, 23 tons of iron and 25 tons of cement were transferred to the Gaza Strip.
On 13 May 2010, Israel allowed approximately 39 tons of building material into Gaza to help rebuild a damaged hospital. The construction material for al Quds hospital was transferred after safeguards in place and French assurances ensured that the construction material would not be diverted elsewhere.
On 24 May 2010 Israel opened the Kerem Shalom crossing to 97 trucks loaded with aid and goods, including six trucks holding 250 tons of cement and one truck loaded with five tons of iron for projects executed and operated by UNRWA.
Electricity
According to the UN report of May 2010, 120 megawatts (over 70%) of the Strip's electricity supply comes from the Israeli electric grid, while 17 MWs come from Egypt and 30 MWs are produced by the Gaza city power station. Since January 2010, there has been deterioration in the supply of electricity to the Gaza Strip since the Hamas regime is unwilling to purchase the fuel to run the Gaza City power station.
Throughout 2009 Israel transferred 41 trucks of equipment for the maintenance of Gaza's electricity grid.
Israel facilitates the transfer of fuel through the border, and maintains that the diversion of fuel from domestic power generators to other uses is wholly a Hamas decision. Over 133 million liters of fuel entered Gaza from Israel over the last 18 months.
Sewage
During the first quarter of 2010, the UN coordinated with Israel the transfer of equipment for UNWRA to upgrade the sewage pumping station. In 2009, 127 trucks containing more than 3,000 tons of hypochlorite entered the Gaza Strip for water purification purposes. Moreover, 48 trucks of equipment for improving the sanitation infrastructure led to a substantial reduction in the Beit Lahya facility's waste levels.
Economy
The United States, Israel, Canada, and the European Union have frozen funds to the Palestinian Hamas government since 2006, recognizing it as a terror organization. Israel has taken measures to support trade and commerce, the banking system, and the existing financial market in the Gaza Strip.
Gazans produce much of their own food products including olives, citrus, vegetables, Halal beef, and dairy products. Primary exports from Gaza are cut flowers and citrus, with trade partners being Israel, Egypt and the West Bank. During 2009, 7.5 million tons of flowers and 54 tons of strawberries were exported from Gaza with Israeli cooperation.
In 2009, 1.1 billion shekels (about $250 million) were transferred to the Gaza Strip for the ongoing activity of international organizations and to pay the salaries of Palestinian Authority workers. 40 million damaged bank notes were traded for new bills, and at the request of the Palestinian Monetary Fund, 282.5 million shekels were transferred from Gazan to Israeli banks.
In February 2010, an agreement was reached with the Palestinian Authority's National Insurance Department to ensure that pensions reached those formerly employed in Israel. The funds were deposited in banks in Judea and Samaria, while the Palestinian Authority was given the responsibility of distributing the funds to the pensioners in Gaza.

Fostering hope and trust - Quality of life in Gaza

The cycle of life
  • Projected life expectancy in the Gaza Strip (2010) is 73.86, greater than Estonia, Malaysia, Jamaica and Bulgaria.
  • The infant mortality rate in Gaza is 17.71 per 1000, lower than that of China, Jordan, Lebanon and Thailand.
  • Fertility rates are about five children per family, equal to many African nations such as Rwanda and Senegal.
Healthcare
Palestinian families receive the same subsidized healthcare as Israelis, about 10% of the cost for the same treatment in the United States.
Schoolchildren
Israel transfers school equipment supplied by UNRWA including notebooks, school bags, writing implements and textbooks. Israel is currently coordinating the transfer of 200,000 laptops for Gaza schoolchildren and the shipment of 74 maritime containers for conversion into Gaza classrooms.
In the first quarter of 2010, Israel transferred 250 trucks with equipment for the UNWRA summer camp, including arts-and-crafts equipment, swimming pools, inflatable toys, ice cream machines, musical instruments, clothing, sports equipment.
Electronic life
About 20% of the population in Gaza owns a personal computer - this is more than Portugal, Brazil, Saudi Arabia or Russia. They have access to ADSL and dial-up Internet service, provided by one of four providers.
About 70% of Gazans own a TV and radio and have access to satellite TV or broadcast TV from the PA or Israel.
Gaza has well-developed telephone landlines, and extensive mobile telephone services provided by PalTel (Jawwal) and the Israeli provider Cellcom.
According to USAID report, 81% of households in Gaza have access to a cell phone. The PA-owned cell phone provider Jawwal has more than 1 million cellular subscribers.
Travel
Despite the inherent dangers involved, Israel permits Gazans and visitors to travel between Gaza and Israel, from Gaza to Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), and even abroad for medical treatment, religious pilgrimages, and business trips. Whenever possible Israel allows for diplomatic activities and trade and commerce with the Gaza Strip.
In additional to medical travel, 21,200 activists from international organizations and over 400 diplomatic delegations were permitted entry into Gaza, while 2,200 Palestinians employed by international organizations were given exit permits from the Gaza Strip.
147 permits were given to Palestinian students for academic studies around the world and special permission was given to Gazan footballers to train in Judea and Samaria and compete in international matches abroad.
During the Christmas holiday, approximately 400 permits were given to visit Bethlehem from Gaza as well 100 permits to travel abroad. In addition, 257 permits were given to businessmen from Gaza to facilitate business operations.

Islamists are murdering Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindu's, Bahia, Zoroastrians, atheists, homosexuals, and treat women as property. It is a fact that the imposition of shariah law means death, destruction, slavery, and a return to a barbaric 7th century mindset, that is heaping misery upon the rest of humanity. why is it so difficult to understand this?
I think its more that secular liberals do 2 things; 1 is that they lump ALL religion into one. 2 is that they can't see that there is one religion that is wreaking havoc across the globe. they are stuck on Christianity and the crusades in the middle ages. then they look at Israel and believe the lies that Israel is an apartheid state. and the believe the lie that you know what is THE religion of peace...

excerpts from a thread on facebook

why the animosity toward Moshe Feiglin? He is a Jew that loves Israel, loves the people of Israel, and only wants what he feels is best for our people. He certainly doesn't agree with giving the land away to the murderers of our people, or to assist Arafat and his minyins ( yamach shmo) from accomplishing their dream of destroying Israel and murdering every Jew, through a phased plan bit by bit, known as the "two state" solution to our death. I mean- COME ON!!

As to whether or not Moshe Feiglin is qualified or not to lead the nation, we are going to have to agree to respectfully disagree on this one point. The reason I have fe...lt he would be a decent choice, from what I have heard from him on the internet, as I live across the pond, for me, is that he will not be relinquishing our God given hard earned land. In addition, I believe, and I could be mistaken, but I believe that the Arabs respect him more than those that try to coddle them or buy their commitment away, Moshe seems to speak from a position of strength which they respect. After listening to his friend Shmuel Sackett talk about having Jewish leadership, Jewish education, and a Jewish state, not just a state for Jews, I'm not worried about Israel turning into a fundamentalist country run by a Jewish taliban, to quote Shmuel.

In this I agree that he is very mistaken about Glenn Beck, who has an unwavering commitment to Israel and the Jewish people. I am not afraid of Christians who support us, especially when they aren't proselytizing and trying to convert us,... which also doesn't scare me as much as it does to my fellow tribesman, they haven't been able to succeed in 2000 years and they won't be able to succeed in the future either. Another point on Christians, especially those that feel the need to proselytize, they have no issues with faith, and inevitably, when they are shown real Torah from Sinai, they become nice Jewish boys and girls, as they are yearning for a closer relationship to Hashem.

My dad used to have a dream of being a journalist, and I actually would like to get into that field, though I don't have a degree in it, I have been under the impression that it is a prerequi...site needed to enter into that profession, perhaps I should be more active on my blog, though doing so usually doesn't earn money., Politics I haven't thought of either, but you sure gave me an idea :-) that might be sort of cool. At 55, I am hoping to start a second career in IT, but if that doesn't work out, perhaps I should give that some more serious thought. Bibi, though he can be a great spokesperson, and surely schooled owe-bummer in what Israel is and is not going to do, he also has been, for me, a disappointment. I might be mistaken, but I also seem to remember that it was Bibi that was instrumental in giving up Hevron to the nazi PA, which I regard as a huge mistake, as was uprooting Gush Katif.

The only solution that I see that will stop the murder emanating from Aza is for that hornet's nest to be utterly destroyed. I know that even suggesting such a thing is an extremist, bordering on insane opinion, and I apologize for offending anyone with such an extremist statement, but it has come down to, "its us or them", our children's lives or theirs.

The Arabs of Aza overwhelmingly voted for the hamas, and they are only too eager to provide them with both logistical as well as moral support, therefore, they are not innocent bystanders, that have no choice.

America and the rest of the world, didn't have such bleeding hearts when it came to fire bombing Dresdin during WW2, or nuking Nagasaki/ Hiroshima; Certainly Israel goes way out of her way to preserve the lives of non combatants, with phone calls and air dropping flyer's warning the population to evacuate, prior to operation cast lead, not to mention putting our children through needless door to door clearing of boobie-trapped houses, instead of just razing the city, as any other country has and would do. I think I may have just crossed a red line by suggesting such a thing, but as I said, the Arabs aren't going to suddenly change their minds, its either us and our children or them. My choice is long life for the Jewish people and swift death to our enemies.

oh boy this thread is getting hot: there is one thing that I would like to mention that has a lot to do with settlers homes being razed and that are the left wing nut judges, one of them in particular, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisc...h has ruled, not for the first time, that any area in Judea and Samaria that has not been declared state land is considered private Arab land by default and all buildings in such areas must be demolished. In addition, there are examples where building permits have been issued by the current gov't, only to be reversed by ehud barak. here is the link to the article about Dorit Beinisch:
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/147952

not only do I want to make aliyah, but I have to fight both the Israeli gov't and the Arabs at the same time!! This is an example of what concerns me:

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/148682#.Ts6wR2O5MRY

and yes I must be insane to want to leave the safety of America, my country that I took an oath to protect and defend its constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
But I have a deep yearning, for some strange reason I can't ...put in words. I'm not a socialist "zionist" nor am I the most religious jew, yet I have strong feelings about how important it is for Jews to reclaim and settle the land. That there are mitvot that can't be fulfilled not living in the land, that the land itself only has yielded its produce when the Jews returned. That we as a people and a nation are at a precipitous crossroads in history, that the world political scene and economies are coming to a head, and I want to be in Israel when this crash occurs.

the gloves come off when it comes to Livni, Ehud Barak, and Peres. I happen to like Dennis Prager, I'm disappointed to hear that he said that, but perhaps he has changed his tune since ...then, especially considering the last several videos that he has produced. I feel that Israel needs to institute the death penalty for Islamists that murder our people. I am also all for considering population transfer, a large portion of the Arabs that live in the Shomron and Yahuda want to leave, we should be able to encourage them with financial assistance. In addition, I want to see a massive increase in building new townships and cities from the Salt Sea to the Mediterranean, for Jewish population, coupled with a massive effort by the Gov't on worldwide immigration. In addition, something has to be done about the left wing nut Judges, in how they are appointed, to how law is created, to how they can be REMOVED. Without these steps, immigration from America and the rest of the diaspora will be only a trickle, Israel will not be able to attract Jews without it, even though anti antisemitism is at a world wide high, and getting worse daily. As I said before, I must be insane to want to come to Israel given that they keep destroying communities like what are mentioned in the articles that I posted, and keep in mind, those communities aren't hilltop shacks thrown up overnight. I keep being told that the only way to fight these wrongs is for me and other Jews to make aliyah, that way there will be the demographic's to cement in place Yahuda and Shomron and the Galil, as well as the Negev and the Golan. I have to respond, that without the reforms that I mentioned, Israel is simply not going to attract the number of Jews needed to do this. keep in mind, we are barely 13 million worldwide, with 6 million in Israel now, we need at least another 4-5 million to make aliyah, how can this happen, when housing is not available, when we release murderers, when we don't fight wars to WIN, and when we have all the other problems that both of us outlined.... maybe the only answer ( I hate to say this) is that the moshiach really needs to come. I don't know, but I do know that this situation isn't going to last long. War is coming my friend, Hamas and Hezbollah are going to be launching their stock piles and Iran along with Egypt will attack. scary stuff on the horizon.

are the communities of Givat Assaf, Migron, Ulpena Neighborhood in Beit El, Amona – all slated for destruction in next 4 months as outlined in this article:
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/148682#.Ts6wR2O5MRY... are they ILLEGAL outposts?

slicah!! please excuse, I would like to interject for one moment.
1. criticizing the Gov't of Israel is not Israel bashing, the same is true for America.
2. While it is true that there is creeping Islamisation in our school system, the...re are plenty of us that are fighting it "tooth and nail", and this current administration is very likely to change come 2012.
3. Similar criticism can be said toward Israel for "allowing" the PA to incite in their school systems, their mosques and their media, and I don't happen to see the equivalent of Al-Jizeera in a pro-Israel media outlet doing all that it can to combat the Jew hatred of the past 60 years, but I would like to be informed if there is, so I can start following that also.
4. The gov't of Israel, is not above harsh criticism. Bibi is no different than most other politicians, who have promised a lot and then not delivered. I am very happy that Gilad was returned alive, and while I understand that the 1000 fatahnicks that were released were picked by Israel, and many were set to be released in a year of so anyway, and that the most vicious one not released, the fact remains that not only are many going to gleefully return to murdering us, but the pattern of releasing these rodafe's has been continued, and will continue to be used by the Arabs in the future; which is why I am all for the death penalty for those Arabs that murder Jews.
5. Israel also has its share of self hating jews like the peace now movement. America isn't alone in the world in this regard. There are plenty of our brethren worldwide that lack education of history, and aren't connected to their roots. I'm not advocating that Israel change into the equivalent of a Jewish taliban, but having a more solid Torah education throughout Israeli society would do wonders in terms of alleviating the condition that is rampant where there are Israeli's that now buy into the lie that Israel is an occupying colonial force that removed Arabs that were in the land since "time immemorial" - and I am using that term to reference the excellent work of Joan Peters, which I'd love to see required reading by all Jews worldwide.
6. I referenced two articles that list the communities of Givat Assaf, Migron, Ulpena Neighborhood in Beit El, Amona – all slated for destruction in next 4 months; this is just another example that scares me and other Jews that not only do care about Israel, and that do dream of making aliyah, but see this being done on a continued basis, for successive generations of administrations while at the same time we see nothing in the news of any Arab villages being torn down, that were build without permits, without permission, in their effort to land grab in their continued war to destroy us. A Jew can't erect so much as a shed without excessive permits and paperwork, without the bulldozers showing up in the middle of the night.

As I have said previously and in other posts, I am considering making aliyah next year- why I want to do this I can't explain, especially given that circumstances aren't going to change very much, there are Judges that make law from the bench that bend over backwards to literally give away the land to the Arabs, and can't be removed from power, and the Gov't continues to destroy the lives of its citizens by destroying their homes; the list goes on, I can't name even a smidgen of injustices that are being perpetrated against the citizens of Israel.

I'd rather fight hand to hand, OG, the giant, than have to suffer at he hands of the Israeli gov't the incessant wrongs it commits against the Jewish people.

shabbat shalom

Into the Fray: A nation betrayed? Martin Sherman - The Jerusalem Post, November 18th, 2011

http://www.israelunitycoalition.org/news/?p=7464#.TtAido-Qavc.printfriendly

This is the first war in history that on the morrow the victors sued for peace and the vanquished called for unconditional surrender.
– Abba Eban on the Six Day War
The preceding citation, from arguably Israel’s most consummate diplomat, encapsulates the glaring irrationality and the inverted logic that has become the accepted hallmark of the politics of the Arab-Israeli conflict, both at the level of theoretical analysis and of practical policy-making.
The abandonment of any coherent, reasonable criteria has not been confined to the attitude of the Arabs towards Israel, but sadly has become a characteristic of Israeli policy towards the Arabs – and of a host of domestic issues that impinge directly and indirectly on that policy.
The absurd becomes routine
Consider the situation, which defies rational explanation, that is emerging today before our eyes, without evoking any significant expression of public incredulity — much less outrage — that such an astonishing development should warrant.
The ruling party of the day, the Likud, is, in effect, imploring the Palestinians to enter into negotiations over a resolution of the conflict on the basis of a principle — the Oslo two-state concept — that it itself rejected vehemently only a few years ago.
Mind you, this bizarre situation has not come about because this previously rejected principle has proved to be a stunning success. Quite the contrary, it has been shown to be an abject failure. After all, the endeavor to implement it has precipitated all the dangers its opponents warned of, and none of the benefits its proponents promised. Indeed, it has wrought death and destruction on Jew and Arab alike on a horrific scale.
Failures don’t come more abject or clear than that.
Yet almost inconceivably, just when it became undeniable that the opponents of territorial concessions and political appeasement were completely vindicated, they began to embrace the very policy they had previously repudiated.
These circumstances mirror almost exactly the inexplicable absurdity expressed in the Abba Eban citation above. Instead of the anti- Oslo victors in the ideological-political clash with their pro-Oslo advocates routing their vanquished adversaries, they set about surrendering to them.
Unwarranted intellectual surrender
This faint-hearted and feeble-minded conduct on the part of what is inappropriately dubbed — usually pejoratively — Israel’s political “Right,” constitutes unacceptable, unwarranted and irresponsible intellectual capitulation.
After all, the political doctrine of what is inappropriately dubbed — usually approvingly — Israel’s political “Left,” should have been consigned to utter and enduring disrepute. Every notion to which the Left has attempted to tether its political credo has come adrift. Every policy-relevant concept, every politically relevant personality on which it pinned its hopes has produced nothing but disaster and disappointment.
Indeed, the manifest folly of the Israeli Left and its preposterous brain-child, the Oslowian “peace process,” should have made it an object of enduring public ridicule. The manifest mendacity of its endeavor to promote it should have made it the object of ubiquitous public distrust.
Sadly however, the Israeli Right has done little to produce such an outcome. In fact it has done much to prevent it. For despite the fact the Left has little to justify its perennial claim to either the moral or the intellectual high ground, the Right has shown little stomach to challenge it.
A catalogue of blindness and blunder
This right-wing reticence is difficult to comprehend. After all, the list of the Left’s blunders is depressingly lengthy. It has been hopelessly wrong about… well, everything.
• It was wrong in embracing the homicidal Nobel peace laureate Yasser Arafat as a credible peace partner who could “deliver the goods.”
• It was wrong in pinning its hopes on Mahmoud Abbas, whose tailored suits and coiffured hair served as deceptively comforting contrasts to Arafat's belligerent keffiyeh and military fatigues.
• It was wrong in believing it could reach a lasting accord with the Palestinians by decoupling Fatah from Hamas and dealing only with the former while ignoring the latter — as both the expulsion of Fatah from Gaza and the recent unification moves prove.
• It was were wrong in portraying Salam Fayyad as a pivotal centerpiece for a durable peace accord — since recent developments demonstrated how precarious his position is.
• It was wrong in ignoring how imprudent it is to attempt to pursue an agreement based on a person-specific configuration of the Palestinian leadership which could be swiftly removed from power — by ballot or bullet — by a more inimical and radical successor – as in Gaza.
• It was wrong in heralding Bashar Assad as young Western-oriented, Internet-adept doctor whose accession to power would usher in an era of peace and progress that would allow Israel to relinquish the Golan.
• It was wrong in urging Israel to avail itself of the “good services” of the Islamist government of Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan as an “honest broker” to promote a deal with Damascus.
• It was wrong in insisting that an Israeli withdrawal to the internationally recognized borders would mollify Hezbollah and bring about peace with Lebanon.
• It was wrong in claiming that Israel could not attain economic prosperity without political peace with the Palestinians… as its current prosperity, even in an increasingly unprosperous world, clearly shows.
Yet in spite of this record of massive misjudgment, the leadership of the political Right persists in curiously misplaced deference to its ideological adversaries on the Left.
Perverting democracy
This deference was painfully evident in the Knesset this week, where issues that impinge on the nation’s ability to act assertively with regard to the Palestinians were raised.
The negative reaction of senior Likud ministers and MKs to the legislative initiatives aimed at addressing the problems of ideological bias in the nation’s judiciary and of foreign funding of inherently anti-Israel NGOs operating under the guise of “human rights,” are a disturbing reflection of the Right’s manifest sense of inferiority generated by the aggressive moralistic posturing of the Left.
While it might be possible to argue that the existing legislative proposals lack a measure of polish and refinement, it cannot be disputed that they raise issues of significance and urgency which must be confronted in the spirit — if not perhaps in the precise detail — set out in these bills.
Protection of the rights of minorities is one thing. Promotion of the ability of minorities to subvert the democratic process is quite another. There is nothing vaguely democratic about facilitating the imposition of minority views on the majority via extra-parliamentary action funded by foreign governments.
There is nothing vaguely undemocratic in a sovereign state instituting measures to limit — or at least monitor — attempts by alien sovereignties to empower fringe elements in the country, with negligible domestic support for their ideas, to subvert the policy of the government elected by universal suffrage.
Indeed, to abstain from doing so would be a dereliction of democratic duty. To advocate such abstention is to pervert, not preserve, democracy.
Judicial legitimacy and independence
The same is true with regard to the initiatives regarding the judiciary. While the independence of judiciary is indeed a matter of vital importance, it will be worth little if the public has no faith in the justice it dispenses. Indeed, the confidence the public has in the courts is no less — perhaps even more – important than their independence. For in the absence of such trust, justice will be sought elsewhere and by other means.
The plummeting degree of confidence the public has in the legal system is a clear warning that the status quo is unsustainable. According to one long-term study by the University of Haifa, barely one-third of the general public has faith in the system. According to Prof. Arye Rattner, who conducted the study, this ongoing 10-year decline in public faith in the courts “constitutes a grave blow to one of the most important foundations of the legal system in a democratic society – legitimacy.”
These words of warning echo precisely those of Prof. Ran Hirschl in his book Towards Juristocracy, which I cited in a recent column, “A real reason for revolution.”
In it Hirschl cautions: “Over the past decade, the public image of the SCI [Supreme Court of Israel] as an… impartial arbiter has been increasingly eroded… the court and its judges are increasingly viewed by a considerable portion of the Israeli public as pushing forward their own political agenda.”
It is thus a shame — or perhaps more precisely, shameful — that senior members of the coalition chose to abandon their parliamentary colleagues and endorsed the unfounded censure of them and their initiatives. A far better and more constructive course would be to join them in addressing any defects in their commendable proposals.
Israel has put its trust in leaders who have led it into great peril — and into those who so far have failed to lead it out of it. It has been placed in great danger by the injudicious action of the Left and the impotent inaction of the Right. The Left has imposed a fatally flawed paradigm on the nation; the Right has failed to formulate a persuasive alternative.
This situation cannot be allowed to continue. There is a potential for great tragedy brewing. Unless this pressing challenge is addressed rapidly and resolutely, all that might remain for future generations to do will be to assign blame for the fulfillment of that tragedy.

I am upset!!

I am upset!!

by Joshua Cane on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 2:34am

I keep retyping.... and retyping and retyping.........

I am upset.... why???  why??

Do you think that I want my children to go to war?  do you think that I LIKE??? being at war??  do you feel that my wish is for my children to die before me???

Sometimes I don't think people really don't understand anything about me at all, or about this world in which we live, because they make statements like I heard  yesterday.

I feel very sorry  that "they" don't seem to understand the differences between the Arab/Muslim societies, and the hatred that they teach their children, and Israeli/ Jewish society and how we teach that life is a treasure.

That there is a huge difference between those that murdered the Fogel family, the people that handed out candy in celebration of those murders, those people that teach jew hatred in their mosques, their schools, their entire societies consisting of 22 arab countries run by dictators, as well as the 40 odd Islamic countries under Shiria law, where women are chattel, where non Muslims are second class citizens or worse, where homosexuals are murdered at the drop of a hat, where there is NO SUCH A THING AS HUMAN RIGHTS!!!

And those societies/countries- typically western societies that have to defend themselves and others against such gross inhumanity.  AMERICA AND ISRAEL ARE TWO SUCH COUNTRIES!!!

I feel like continuing to point out ad-infinite-um the countless examples of why Jews/ Judaism, and Israel are better than/ different than the Muslims... but I think that my words will only fall on  DEAF ears.

Why are there police forces, or armies?  Why is there such a thing as self defense?  Why has Nazism, totalitarianism, and the other "isms" that demean and treat life in a worthless manner, labeled EVIL?  If rape is inevitable, why not just lay down and enjoy it?

Why do  we as Jews, send our children to Israel?  To be a ghetto Jews?  Why are there converts to Judaism????   So that some imaginary God has to be obeyed?

What do people think that this "religion" called Judaism is? Some method of faith only where rules and regulations have to be obeyed blindly, like don't turn on the lights on shabbat, don't drive a car,  or only eat this or that?

Oh sure there are all those rules, but there are so much more IMPORTANT principles than that, like oh let me see, standing up to evil and stopping it? Living a life filled with morality, truth, justice and fairness, and HOLINESS!!!

But it seems like the only thing that means something to many of my own people are those convenient rules that  can be held over someone elses head. To be holier than thou!!!   Don't do this, Do that, Listen to me...

NO!!!

Does anyone think for one moment that any parent, or for that manner, any Jewish parent whose child is in the Israeli army, or any parent in the American military, doesn't fear for their children's lives? We are all  terrified, praying each moment for them, hoping beyond all hope that they stay out of harms way.

My father fought in two wars fighting Nazism, fighting fascism.  He left his children with the belief system that evil HAS to be fought, sometimes even to die to defeat.

Unfortunately,   that same exact Nazism is alive and well in the arab-muslim world today.  The world can and seems to ignore this but it won't go away.

I will not quietly and passively tolerate moral equivalence or moral relativism. not from anyone!! least of all from members of my family!!! or my friends....

Moral equivalence, moral relativism, is WRONG!!!

For the record, NO I don't want my children to go to war, no I don't want my children to die in war, No I don't want to have to fight wars, but war IS being waged against the Jewish people, and against all freedom loving people world wide.

It is a terrible shame that the world can't see this and if it does, they want to ignore it, hoping it won't affect them personally.

Just living in Israel is dangerous, and now living here in America, is now a dangerous place to live.

Especially in a Jewish community.

HINT: we are targets because people hate us.  Period.

This world is going to change drastically, in the next few years, if not the next few months...

Financially as well as sociologically. We are all going to be affected by this coming world war.

Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.... for those of you that converted to Judaism.....

You picked a fine time to convert!!!

But then again, there isn't a better time to be a Jew!!!

At least we don't have to live in a ghetto, and put up with being raped and murdered without the means or rights to defend ourselves.

We live in a time when the modern state of Israel DOES exist.

BOTH FOR US AND OUR CHILDREN'S BENEFIT!

However, this benefit comes with a price,  which is more than just keeping the laws of kashrut or shabbat. We are so fortunate that we have the freedom to worship our religion, but this freedom comes with a dear price, which is eternal vigilance, and the realization that sometimes it takes standing up to evil, fighting against evil, OBLITERATING EVIL, to keep our freedoms, our lives, our sacred liberty.

It takes MUCH MORE.

Sometimes it takes giving our very lives.

fires

this is absolutely war!!!  it has been declared on us and the enemy is doing their utmost to destroy Israel.  they are the people of the sand, and they hate what the jews have do to the land by reclaiming it, making it blossom.  when are the Jewish people going to figure this out?  so many of my brethren are so concerned with gay rights ( a noble cause because people that are gay are human beings first ) women reading from the Torah- nothing quite wrong with that but in traditional Judaism, women are considered spiritually superior to men and therefore don't have the same or the amount of mitzvot that men are required to do.  and while I'm on that subject, since the woman's rights movement, I thought that the feminist point was that women don't have to do everything a man does to be treated equally.  thats the point of traditional judaism, women are superior, and don't do the same things.  DOH!!  Why is it that liberal Jews feel that secular humanism is superior to Torah Judaism?  I just don't get it.  The secular world is where woman have been relegated to sex objects.  Tell me that playboy, penthouse and porn aren't from the secular world!!  tell me that sex before marriage isn't from the secular world.  OF COURSE IT IS.

Now back to Israel,  this tragedy should be the catalyst that is used for  change.  Complete and total annexation of Judah and Samaria and Aza.  The complete and utter destruction and annihilation of all terrorist groups like the Hamas, and Hezbullah, and Fatah.  Encourage the Arabs to emigrate to  Arab countries, especially Jordan, which is and has been the Palestinian State.  The resettling of Jews into their own homes.

chanukka, the real meaning

let us never forget the two lessons that chanukka teaches us:
 1. it is the commemoration of fighting for ones freedom.
2.  it is the age old story of the struggle between Hellinism vs Judaism.  The story of the fight against assimilation.  I repost these two articles to reinforce my views:  both were published on Ted Belmans Blog, Israpundit.

Tonight is the first night of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, Chanukah.
Chag Chanukah Samayach. Happy Chanukah Holiday. Yamit
Only part of the story was the Maccabees fight for getting the Greeks out of Israel, and the cleansing and dedication of the Temple. The Chanukah Story was also about a civil war amongst the Jews. Judah and the boys were fighting other Jews who had turned away from their faith by combining it with Greek/Hellenistic practices. The resulting assimilation caused a loss of Jewish faith and tradition, and finally laws against practicing Jewish ritual. Chanukah is a holiday about Jews fighting against assimilation, but the ACLU-types would have us celebrate it by assimilating.
by rabbi Meir Kahane H”YD
If I were a Reform rabbi; if I were a leader of the Establishment whose money and prestige have succeeded in capturing for him the leadership and voice of American Jewry; if I were one of the members of the Israeli Government’s ruling group; if I were an enlightened sophisticated, modern Jewish intellectual, I would climb the barricades and join in battle against the most dangerous of all Jewish holidays – Chanukah.
It is a measure of the total ignorance of the world Jewish community that there is no holiday that is more universally celebrated than the “Feast of Lights”, and it is an equal measure of the intellectual dishonesty and of Jewish leadership that it plays along with the lie. For if ever there was a holiday that stands for everything that the mass of world Jewry and their leadership has rejected – it is this one. If one would find an event that is truly rooted in everything that Jews of our times and their leaders have rejected and, indeed, attacked – it is this one. If there is any holiday that is more “unJewish” in the sense of our modern beliefs and practices – I do not know of it.
The Chanukah that has erupted unto the world Jewish scene in all its childishness, asininity, shallowness, ignorance and fraud – is not the Chanukah of reality. The Chanukah that came into vogue because of Jewish parents – in their vapidness – needed something to counteract Christmas; that exploded in a show of “we-can-have-lights-just-as-our-goyish-neighbors” and in an effort to reward our spoiled children with eight gifts instead of the poor Christian one; the Chanukah that the Temple, under its captive rabbi, turned into a school pageant so that the beaming parents might think that the Religious School is really successful instead of the tragic joke and waste that it really is; the Chanukah that speaks of Jewish Patrick Henrys giving-me-liberty-or death and the pictures of Maccabees as great liberal saviors who fought so that the kibbutzim might continue to be free to preach their Marx and eat their ham, that the split-level dwellers of suburbia might be allowed to violate their Sabbath in perfect freedom and the Reform and Conservative Temples continue the fight for civil rights for Blacks, Puerto Ricans and Jane Fonda, is not remotely connected with reality.
This is NOT the Chanukah of our ancestors, of the generations of Jews of Eastern Europe and Yemen and Morocco and the crusades and Spain and Babylon. It is surely not the Chanukah for which the Maccabees themselves died. Truly, could those whom we honor so munificently, return and see what Chanukah has become, they might very well begin a second Maccabean revolt. For the life that we Jews lead today was the very cause, the REAL reason for the revolt of the Jews “in those days in our times.”
What happened in that era more than 2000 years ago? What led a handful of Jews to rise up in violence against the enemy? And precisely who WAS the enemy? What were they fighting FOR and who were they fighting AGAINST?
For years, the people of Judea had been the vassals of Greece. True independence as a state had been unknown for all those decades and, yet, the Jews did not rise up in revolt. It was only when the Greek policy shifted from mere political control to one that attempted to suppress the Jewish religion that the revolt erupted in all its bloodiness. It was not mere liberty that led to the Maccabean uprising that we so passionately applaud. What we are really cheering is a brave group of Jews who fought and plunged Judea into a bloodbath for the right to observe the Sabbath, to follow the laws of kashruth, to obey the laws of the Torah. IN A WORD EVERYTHING ABOUT CHANUKAH THAT WE COMMEMORATE AND TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO COMMEMORATE ARE THINGS WE CONSIDER TO BE OUTMODED, MEDIEVAL AND CHILDISH!
At best, then, those who fought and died for Chanukah were naïve and obscurantist. Had we lived in those days we would certainly not have done what they did for everyone knows that the laws of the Torah are not really Divine but only the products of evolution and men (do not the Reform, Reconstructionist and large parts of the Conservative movements write this daily?) Surely we would not have fought for that which we violate every day of our lives! No, at best Chanukah emerges as a needless holiday if not a foolish one. Poor Hannah and her seven children; poor Mattathias and Judah; poor well meaning chaps all but hopelessly backward and utterly unnecessary sacrifices.
But there is more. Not only is Chanukah really a foolish and unnecessary holiday, it is also one that is dangerously fanatical and illiberal. The first act of rebellion, the first enemy who fell at the hands of the brave Jewish heroes whom our delightful children portray so cleverly in their Sunday and religious school pageants, was NOT a Greek. He was a Jew.
When the enemy sent its troops into the town of Modin to set up an idol and demand its worship, it was a Jew who decided to exercise his freedom of pagan worship and who approached the altar to worship Zeus (after all, what business was it of anyone what this fellow worshipped?) And it was this Jew, this apostate, this religious traitor who was struck down by the brave, glorious, courageous (are these not the words all our Sunday schools use to describe him?) Mattathias, as he shouted: “Whoever is for G-d, follow me!”
What have we here? What kind of religious intolerance and bigotry? What kind of a man is this for the anti-religious of Hashomer Hatzair, the graceful temples of suburbia, the sophisticated intellectuals, the liberal open-minded Jews and all the drones who have wearied us unto death with the concept of Judaism as a humanistic, open-minded, undogmatic, liberal, universalistic (if not Marxist) religion, to honor? What kind of nationalism is this for David-Ben-Gurion (he who rejects the Galut and speaks of the proud, free Jew of ancient Judea and Israel)?
And to crush us even more (we who know that Judaism is a faith of peace which deplores violence), what kind of Jews were these who reacted to oppression with FORCE? Surely we who so properly have deplored Jewish violence as fascistic, immoral and (above all!) UN-JEWISH, stand in horror as we contemplate Jews who declined to picket the Syrian Greeks to death and who rejected quiet diplomacy for the sword, spear and arrow (had there been bombs in those days, who can tell what they might have done?) and “descended to the level of evil,” thus rejecting the ethical and moral concepts of Judaism.
Is this the kind of a holiday we wish to propagate? Are these the kinds of men we want our moral and humanistic children to honor? Is this the kind of Judaism that we wish to observe and pass on to our children?
Where shall we find the man of courage the one voice, in the wilderness to cry out against Chanukah and the Judaism that it represents-the Judaism of our grandparents and ancestors? Where shall we find the man of honesty and integrity to attack the Judaism of Medievalism and outdated foolishness; the Judaism of bigotry that strikes down Jews who refuse to observe the law; the Judaism of violence that calls for Jewish force and might against the enemy? When shall we find the courage to proudly eat our Chinese food and violate our Sabbaths and reject all the separateness, nationalism and religious maximalism that Chanukah so ignobly represents? …Down with Chanukah! It is a regressive holiday that merely symbolizes the Judaism that always was; the Judaism that was handed down to us from Sinai; the Judaism that made our ancestors ready to give their lives for the L-rd; the Judaism that young people instinctively know is true and great and real. Such Judaism is dangerous for us and our leaders. We must do all in our power to bury it.

8 Responses to Down With Hanukah

  1. If it were up to the likes of Eric Yoffie of the Union for “Reform Judaism,” we would all be worshiping honest-to-Zeus idols (along with our Christian neighbors, as Jesus would have been a Zeus-worshiper) because the Maccabees would have had no swords to defend themselves.
My understanding is that Alexander the Great held his empire together by, among other things, allowing religious freedom (so Jews had no reason to resist or turn on him). His successor Antiochus wasn’t as smart, so he got himself a revolution by trying to force his religion on his subjects.
  2. Mer says:
WoW. Thats deep. I thought Chanukah was in remembrance of a miracle. A sign from God that there was only enough oil in the Temple for one day yet it burned for eight days. Didnt know there was more to it.
  3. Yonatan says:
Yeah Mer, big lesson here for us today. We initiated this with our actions and Hashem responded in kind with helping us to a military victory and providing that a single days oil would last 8 – the exact time necessary to prepare more kosher oil. The bigger miracle was the military victory but most overlook that and consider it a human accomplishment. If we do our part, Hashem does his part. We couldn’t have accomplished any of our military victories – even the ones in today’s age, without his help.
PS – this is the lesson that AE fails to recognize also. In his mind it is the american government that guarantees our survival – poppycock – It is Hashem that provides this. Chag Hanukah Sameach!
  4. Mer says:
Yonatan. When you take a look around the world it looks like we are going to NEED another Chanukah experience. Hopefully there are enough Jews that are worthy or we could all be toast.
  5. Yonatan says:
Rest assured – we will not all be toast. If you don’t already, read the haftorah weekly, with some commentary. You will feel better about the state of things.
  6. Jerry says:
Mer, the most important thing to know about Hanukkah is that it was not a “clean” holiday. It was full of real history – pain, death, and ultimate triumph. The Maccabees were victorious, but then went on to make political mistakes (allying themselves with Rome) that led to the destruction of the Temple that they saved. They did the best they could, not being able to predict the future. We are doing the best that we can, given our national and individual limitations. The most important thing is that we are here to celebrate their sacrifices for us. The lights of Hanukkah are the holiday’s blessing – that we should live in the supernal beauty of the moment.

In those days , in these times!

A story is told about the freezing days and nights at Valley Forge when General Washington tried to rally his tattered troops against the mercenaries of the British empire. On one bitter cold night Washington made the rounds encouraging his men to hold on until morning. He came across one young man lighting a small oil lamp in a dark cold corner of his tattered tent. The general stopped to offer some warm words of encouragement. When he bent down he said, “I see you brought your own heat from home. Well done!” The soldier looked up startled at the VIP visitor and told the general, ”No sir, I am not even allowed to have any benefit from this candle. It is holy, it is a Chanukah candle commemorating the victory of my persecuted forefathers over the vast Greek armies of oppression in the Land of Israel.” The general paused and said, “Son, you have given me the greatest encouragement possible. I am confident that we too will overcome the odds and defeat tyranny in our land”
Years later, after the war, a knock brought the young Jewish veteran to the door of his New York apartment. It was now-President Washington at the door. He brought a medallion with him. On one side were the words “ Valley Forge”, On the other was Chanukah: “In those days in these times”.

    – Bill Levinson
Alexander died young, and was succeeded by his generals. A descendant of the general Seleucis, namely, Antiochus the Great, fought and was defeated by the Romans, who exacted a harsh tribute. One of Antiochus’ successors, namely Antiochus Epiphanes (/”Epimanes”), tried raising money for the tribute by raiding temples. He invaded Egypt, hoping to rebuild an empire that could throw off the Roman yoke. The Romans intervened on behalf of the Egyptians, though, and he was forced to swallow his pride and retreat to Antioch. On the way, he desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem.
In order to withstand the Romans, Antiochus needed to unify his disparate empire — an empire which consisted of once-proud kingdoms such as Judea, Syria, Babylonia, Persia, etc. He hoped to effect unity by instituting Hellenism as the state religion. He pushed the Jews too far in this, and they revolted. The rest is Hanukkah.

    Hanukkah for Dhimmis Dummies

    by Bill Levinson
Hanukkah is often called “the Jewish Christmas” because it takes place at about the same time of year. There is in fact a very strong connection between the two holidays; had it not been for the events that Hanukkah commemorates, there would be no Christmas. Hanukkah is about standing up to those who menace one’s home, family, or way of life as opposed to singing Kumbaya with them.
We have often pointed out that science fiction and fantasy societies are based on real human societies, and the one in Battlestar Galactica is no exception. We suspect that it is an alternate history in which Michael Lerner of Tikkun.org and Eric Yoffie of the United “American” “Hebrew” Congregations (now the Union for “Reform Judaism”) were in charge of the Jewish people when the Greeks demanded that the Jews worship the Greek idols. As stated by Yoffie at the Million Mom March rally in 2000,
We’re going to find out who’s getting NRA funds, and benefiting from NRA ads, and we’re going to vote for the other guy. The American people, I believe, are ready for a leader who will take on the fanatics and support sensible gun control. Controlling guns is not only a political matter, it is a solemn religious obligation. Our gun-flooded society has turned weapons into idols, and the worship of idols must be recognized for what it is-blasphemy.
With “Jewish” leadership like this, of course, the Maccabees (who would probably have been jailed by the Yoffie-led Hebrews for owning unlicensed and unregistered swords) would have lost the war, and the ex-Jews would then have ended up worshiping genuine honest-to-the-gods graven images. The result would have been a space-faring civilization like that in Battlestar Galactica, where spaceship pilots carry little Greek idols to which they pray on a regular basis. Jesus would then have been an idol-worshiper like everyone else, and the Christian religion would have never existed.
Hanukkah is therefore about defending one’s home, family, and country: a concept totally repugnant to the Kumbaya-singers. The war between the Maccabees and the Greeks was only the first in which Jews had to fight for their survival.
Two thousand or so years later, Minutemen used privately-owned firearms in the American War of Independence to create a country with freedom of religion. Many Jews emigrated from Europe and came to America so they could practice Judaism without having to worry about pogroms by Inquisitions, Cossacks, and the like.
In 1943, Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto revolted against the Nazis. “The first armed resistance occurred when a 17- year-old [idolator and fanatic per Eric Yoffie] named Emily Landau flung a grenade into a cluster of SS men from a rooftop on Gesia Street, killing or wounding a dozen of them. The SS promptly assaulted the building with submachine guns blazing, only to be met by a volley of return fire that felled four or five Germans and drove the rest back in disorder. Emily Landau was bending down to recover a pistol from a slain SS officer when she was struck by a bullet fired by a German rifleman covering his comrades’ retreat. [She died trying to recover an "idol," which proves her a fanatic, right, Mr. Yoffie?] The first to fight, she was also the first to die” (Jon Guttmann, “Genocide Delayed”).
In 1947, Jews founded the Nation of Israel in the face of immense hardships. Its Arab neighbors invaded so the “idolators and fanatics” fought back desperately with whatever firearms they could buy, beg, borrow, or steal. If it had been up to Yoffie and the Union of “American” “Hebrew” Congregations, the Arabs would have overrun the Jews and thrown them into the sea. (Recommended viewing: “Cast a Giant Shadow” with Kirk Douglas as Col. Mickey Marcus.)
Physical cowardice and elitism are the elephants in the gun controllers’ living room, the ones that everyone knows about but no one wants to acknowledge. Ownership of a weapon requires the implicit acceptance of the idea that one may have to fight and possibly die to protect oneself or those for whose safety one is responsible: an idea that is repugnant to the typical gun control supporter or Kumbaya-singer (and the two usually go hand in hand).
This position is reinforced by the fact that some societies (e.g. feudal Japan, Polish Commonwealth) actually required their gentry to carry or at least own weapons, as an explicit symbol of their responsibility to defend that society. We therefore recommend that the gun control movement replace its handgun with a red line through it with a white feather. We recommend, in fact, that gun registration and confiscation advocates send one another white feathers by way of greeting, perhaps on September 30 (the anniversary of Neville Chamberlain’s Munich agreement with Adolf Hitler).
There is meanwhile a bumper sticker that says, “Free men own weapons, slaves don’t.” It would be more precise to say, “Slaves are ISSUED weapons, free people OWN them.” Many countries with strict gun control laws conscript their subjects into their armies, where they are issued weapons, and this practice dates to antiquity. The ancient Greeks employed Scythian slaves as police, whose tasks included rounding up negligent citizens who failed to show up for a public vote. Turkish Janissaries were the property of the state, albeit sufficiently privileged that many parents hoped their sons would be taken to serve as Janissaries. The Greek citizen, on the other hand, was not only permitted to own weapons but was in fact expected to show up armed with his own weapons during time of war. Service as a hoplite or armored infantryman was therefore the privilege of those who could afford the costly armor; lesser men were slingers, archers, and so on. A Polish szlachta or nobleman was similarly required to present himself along with his personally owned horse and weapons for military service. The government paid only for his lances, which were both expensive and expendable. There was a time in England when it was illegal to practice any sport but archery on Sundays, because the kings wanted a ready supply of longbowmen in case there was a war. The rulers in question obviously did not fear assassination or “voting from the rooftops” because a longbowman was quite capable of taking somebody out at well over 200 paces, and Queen Elizabeth’s speech at Tilbury says emphatically that she did not fear weapons in the hands of her loyal subjects.
These precedents leave little doubt as to the Founding Fathers’ interpretation of the Second Amendment; the right to keep and bear arms was already, and in countries other than the United States, instrumental to a nation’s possession of a strong militia. It emphatically did not refer to a National Guard (an institution that had yet to be invented) whose members were issued weapons. We are truly amazed that four Supreme Court Justices including Ruth Bader Ginsberg had a problem with this elementary concept that is easily understandable by anybody with even a high school mastery of civics and the English language.
The bottom line was stated in a movie about the life of Jesus: “Those who live by the sword kill those who have no swords and go on living.” History’s most vicious conquerors and genocidal maniacs have indeed lived quite well by the sword unless and until they picked a fight with the wrong people, who invariably also had swords as opposed to flowers and peace signs.
Some gun control supporters are, however, former police officers and soldiers; people who are obviously not afraid to bear arms. Their position is apparently that of elitist medieval overlords who wanted a monopoly on the means of violence. There were times when feudal Japan banned commoners from owning even knives. not to control crime, of which there is relatively little in Japanese society, but to prevent the commoners from defending themselves against sword-wielding samurai. Medieval knights similarly hated the crossbow, which allowed a commoner to shoot even the bluest-blooded nobleman from his saddle.
Finally we have elitist cowards like Rosie O’ Donnell and the late Ted Kennedy. Both employed armed bodyguards while demanding strict gun laws for commoners. Elitists want a monopoly on the means of violence, and cowards are unwilling to bear arms themselves. Niccolo Machievelli wrote a long time ago that you cannot pay a man enough to die for you, but O’ Donnell and Kennedy apparently believe otherwise. (We add in 2008 that Governor Rod Blagojevich of Illinois, who has allegedly tried to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat, also opposes gun ownership by law-abiding people. If he is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, he will be just one more common criminal who doesn’t want honest people to own guns. We add in 2009 that gun control advocate Bobby Rush, D-IL, also is a common criminal and a former member of an organization, the Black Panthers, that advocated the murder of police officers.)
On a larger scale, the Kumbaya-singers want to disarm the world’s democracies to avoid threatening tin-pot dictatorships like North Korea and Iran. The Kumbaya-singers think it’s fine and dandy for those dictatorships to have the means of killing millions of innocent people, because they assume that Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are Kumbaya-singers just like Jimmy Carter and themselves. This is of course a manifestation of their personal cowardice, because they are afraid to even think that Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad might actually set off a nuclear weapon in New York City or Los Angeles. As Herman Kahn wrote of nuclear war, refusal to think about the unthinkable makes the unthinkable not only thinkable, but likely.
A large number of Christians are starting to point out that Christmas is not about shopping malls, plastic Santas, and so on. It is past time for Jews to remember what Hanukkah is really about, and it has very little to do with anything the Jewish Left represents.

      Right on Bill,
I’m an American gun-owner, and my right to keep and bear arms for purposes of self-protection is as precious to me as any other right that I know of. Maybe even more so. Because if I lose my life to an aggressor because I was purposely disarmed by my own government, then what good were any other rights.
There is a State of Israel today solely because the best men and women of the Jewish nation decided to take up arms to defend their right to reclaim and retake their ancient homeland. Armed Jews are the only ones I ever have saluted or otherwise honored and ever have seen fit to emulate. Not for nothing do I serve the National Rifle Association as election volunteer coordinator in the Wisconsin 2nd congressional district for the IRA Institute of Legislative Affairs (NRA-ILA). Our state of Wisconsin has been one of only two states that banned and rights of citizens to obtain permits for concealed carry of firearms. But now we have just elected a solid conservative leadership of the office of the governor, of the state senate and the state assembly. So I have it on good authority that appropriate concealed carry leglislation is one of the first legislative passages that will be dealt with shortly after the new leadership is sworn into office on Jan 3, 2011.

Why carry a gun? Because a cop is too heavy.
    3. What these Lefties forget is that what keeps a government honest is the fact that the people have guns. The people can fight back if necessary. It is the way to ensure freedom and democracy. I wonder how long the Mullahs in Iran would have lasted if the people in the Green Revolution had guns against the Basij instead of just their bodies? Luckily we have a Senate that needs to ratify any idiotic agreement the President makes with anyone. Luckily that is also the power of the people.
